An easy first outing at Kilanerin
Coillte lists Kilanerin Wood Loop as an easy three-kilometre walk with red waymarkers and an estimated walking time of 45 minutes. If someone has suggested “a hike” and you like the idea but have no clue how long you want to be out, this gives you a clear starting point. Agree to walk the one loop. Leave room in the plan to stop and talk.
A slightly longer loop at Curragh Wood
Curragh Wood sits on the opposite side of the local road. Its white-marked loop covers 3.5 kilometres, with about an hour allowed by Coillte. Two men arriving separately can quite easily end up waiting in different woods. Pick the loop by name, send the same map pin and agree which entrance you mean before leaving home.
Which one would you choose?
If you have an hour between drop-off and another commitment, allow for getting in and out of the car park as well as walking. The shorter red loop buys you a little time. If you have a free morning, the white loop leaves space for a leisurely walk and a coffee afterwards. Either is a self-guided option. A Brotherhood event has its own meeting instructions.
Check on the day
Look at the land manager’s notices and trail map before setting off. The stated times are estimates. Keep an eye on the waymarkers and respect closures even if a route you saved earlier looks open. Coillte’s Kilanerin and Curragh map and visitor information.
Prefer to meet a few people?
Have a look at the men’s hiking group and upcoming event dates. If it is your first time, message the organiser with the walks you already enjoy. “I’m comfortable doing Kilanerin in an hour” gives a much better picture than “I’m a bit unfit”.
